Cervis alternative for NZ and Australian charities
Cervis is a US volunteer registration system with published flat-rate plans and unlimited volunteers on every one. If you're weighing it up for an appeal or a programme in New Zealand or Australia, this page sets the two platforms side by side on what each vendor publishes: price, where the data lives, who answers support, and what each product is built for. Where Cervis doesn't publish an answer, we say so rather than guessing.
Two different buyers search for a Cervis alternative
Cervis and PurposeTech overlap, but they lead with different programmes. Working out which one you run answers most of the comparison before the table does.
Ongoing, on-site volunteer programmes
Food banks, schools, hospitals, faith groups and animal welfare – volunteers rostered week after week, with hours to log, waivers to sign and people to check in at the door. Cervis builds for these sectors and prices them on a flat rate with no volunteer limit. If this is your programme, Cervis is a reasonable choice and PurposeTech does not claim parity.
Appeal days and campaign volunteering
Street appeals, collection days, clean-ups and one-off community campaigns – a few thousand people mobilised across a lot of sites in a short window, often found and booked on a phone, coordinated by someone in New Zealand or Australia who wants support in their own working day. This is the organisation PurposeTech is built for, and it's where the rest of this page focuses.
If you're still on a spreadsheet, you are probably not choosing between two systems yet – you are deciding whether a system is worth it at all. Our volunteer spreadsheet guide covers what a spreadsheet does well and where it starts to cost you, before you price anything.
Where Cervis is the established choice
A fair comparison starts with what Cervis does well. Its prices are published, from $25 a month, and every plan includes unlimited volunteers, administrators and events. At list price its plans cost less than PurposeTech's Growth plan. It has been in market a long time – its oldest public review on Capterra is dated December 2009 – and it covers the everyday work of a volunteer programme: hours tracking, electronic waivers, background-check ordering, waitlists, reminders by email and SMS, a check-in kiosk and QR-code sign-in from a volunteer's own phone, name tags, awards, and a reservation code that holds places for a group.
It also names Salesforce and Raiser's Edge NXT integrations, and reviewers on Capterra praise its support. PurposeTech does not record check-in on the day, does not publish SMS reminders, and has no Raiser's Edge connector. If those are what your programme turns on, Cervis is the more established fit.

Where PurposeTech is purpose-built
Data in Australia, a team in New Zealand
Cervis states that it hosts in Ohio and Oregon, and its support runs Monday to Saturday on US Mountain Time. PurposeTech stores its database in Australia (AWS Sydney), lists every supporting service on its sub-processors page, and is built and supported from Auckland. It holds no formal certifications – the practices are set out on the security page so you can judge them yourself. Before an appeal weekend, check how each vendor's support hours fall in your own time zone.
A campaign site in your brand, booked on a phone
Cervis gives volunteers a standard list of opportunities, linked from or embedded in your website, and has chosen a web-based platform over an app. PurposeTech gives each campaign its own site with your branding and domain, where volunteers pick a site and a shift on their phone and manage their shifts afterwards. See the street appeals product for screenshots of the volunteer's view.
Salesforce sync you can see, and AI help built in
Cervis lists Salesforce under its Enterprise edition but does not publish which way data flows. PurposeTech's Growth plan lists Salesforce integration: contacts sync both ways every few minutes, sites, shifts and regions come in from Salesforce, and bookings go back out. It is set up with your Salesforce consultant. The AI assistant drafts volunteer emails and sign-up forms from a short prompt; no AI feature appears on Cervis's site.
NZD pricing built for appeal days
Growth is NZD 450 a month or NZD 4,500 a year, excluding GST, and includes 5,000 active volunteers; Enterprise is custom, from NZD 15,000 a year with setup included. Both are on the pricing page. Cervis costs less at list. What the Growth price buys is a platform built for single-day mass mobilisation – thousands of collectors, hundreds of sites, area coordinators and coverage tracking – which is PurposeTech's core production use case.
What Cervis reviewers say
Cervis holds 4.3/5 on Capterra from 18 reviews. Support and value get consistent praise; the complaints that recur are the number of steps to register and the depth of reporting for large programmes. Every review is dated 2009 to 2021, and Cervis has added features since, so treat these as questions to ask a current user rather than as current faults. The quotes are reproduced verbatim with platform and date.
“Customer service is quick to respond”
“CERVIS truly does everything you need it to do”
“how many steps it takes to register for a volunteer opportunity”
“The reporting on this software is less than desirable”

Cervis alternative FAQ
How much does Cervis cost?
Cervis publishes flat-rate plans: Basic at $25 a month or $300 a year, Standard at $120 a month or $1,200 a year, Premier at $200 a month or $2,100 a year, and Enterprise at a custom price. Every plan includes unlimited volunteers, administrators and events. There is a required one-time set-up fee of $175, and optional paid training. PurposeTech's Growth plan is NZD 450 a month or NZD 4,500 a year, excluding GST, and includes 5,000 active volunteers. At list price, Cervis's plans cost less than Growth; the comparison turns on what each plan includes.
Are Cervis's prices in US dollars?
Cervis shows its prices with a “$” sign and does not state the currency or whether tax is included. It is a US company, so US dollars is likely, but ask Cervis to confirm the currency and tax treatment before you budget. PurposeTech publishes prices in NZD, excluding GST.
Where is volunteer data hosted?
Cervis states that it uses redundant SOC 2 certified data centres in Ohio and Oregon, in the United States. PurposeTech stores its database in Australia (AWS Sydney), with some supporting services in the United States, all listed on the sub-processors page. It holds no formal security certifications; its practices are published on the security page. If your board has a view on sending volunteer data overseas, ask each vendor how it meets the NZ Privacy Act 2020.
Does Cervis connect to Salesforce or Raiser's Edge?
Cervis lists Salesforce and Blackbaud (Raiser's Edge NXT and Blackbaud CRM) under its Enterprise edition, and its FAQ also lists a REST API and CSV import and export. It does not publish which way data flows or which fields map. PurposeTech lists Salesforce integration on its Growth plan: contacts sync both ways every few minutes, sites, shifts and regions come in from Salesforce, and bookings go back out. It is set up with your Salesforce consultant. PurposeTech does not publish a Raiser's Edge connector, so if you run Raiser's Edge, Cervis names one and PurposeTech does not.
Is PurposeTech a direct replacement for Cervis?
It depends on what you run. Cervis has a long track record with ongoing, on-site volunteer programmes: hours tracking, waivers, background checks through a US provider, kiosk and QR-code check-in, name tags and awards, with unlimited volunteers on every plan. PurposeTech does not claim parity there, and it does not record check-in on the day. For street appeals, collection days and campaign-shaped volunteering run by NZ and Australian charities that want a branded campaign site, NZD pricing and a team in New Zealand, PurposeTech is built for exactly that.
Can I try PurposeTech before committing?
Yes. Fill in the short form and the PurposeTech team calls within one business day to set you up and walk you through the platform before you commit. No credit card is needed. Cervis offers a demo through its contact form.
