National Volunteer Week 2025: "Connecting Communities"

National Volunteer Week (NVW) 2025 celebrates the millions of Australians who give their time to strengthen communities across the nation. This year's theme, "Connecting Communities," emphasises volunteering's unique power to foster inclusive, thriving communities.

Nationwide Celebrations

Events are taking place across every state and territory throughout the week. In Western Australia alone, the state government is supporting 233 community organisations with grants totalling $355,000 to host special recognition events—from wildlife bingo sessions to community award nights.

The Australian Sports Commission is running the "3 Cheers for Volunteers" campaign, encouraging Australians to nominate and celebrate sport volunteers who make a difference in their communities. From junior cricket coaches to athletics officials, these volunteers are the backbone of grassroots sport.

Australian Red Cross: 17,000+ Volunteers Strong

The Australian Red Cross is using NVW to celebrate its more than 17,000 members and volunteers who have played vital roles in emergency responses, community support programmes, and humanitarian efforts throughout the year.

"Our volunteers are the heart of everything we do," said a Red Cross spokesperson. "From responding to natural disasters to supporting vulnerable community members, they show up when people need help most."

Volunteering contributes billions of dollars to the Australian economy each year. Beyond the economic impact, the social value is immeasurable—volunteers build social cohesion, reduce isolation, and create the networks that make communities resilient.
